Cypress Duo is a flute and guitar duo based in Wilmington, NC. Justin Hoke, guitar, teaches music at University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Amanda Hoke, flute, is an active performer and teacher in and around Wilmington.
Amanda Hoke is an active teacher and performer in North Carolina. She has played the Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestra, Panama City POPS orchestra (FL), the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, and the Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra (TN). She can be heard performing with the flute and guitar ensemble, Cypress Duo and the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra. Her former teachers include Eva Amsler, Dr. Shelley Binder, Kathy Karr, and Dr. Stephanie Rea. She served as a graduate teaching assistant at University of Tennessee Knoxville, and Florida State University. She completed her doctoral studies in music from Florida State University in the fall of 2016. She currently lives in Wilmington, NC where she teaches general elementary music and flute. In March 2019 she was awarded the NC Governor’s Discovery Award. She is also the founder of The Flute Examiner, an online newsletter dedicated to flute and flute pedagogy.
Justin Hoke is an active soloist, chamber musician, and educator based in Wilmington, North Carolina. He has been featured as a soloist on classical and electric guitar with the Panama City Orchestra, Florida State University Orchestra, and the Appalachian State University Guitar Orchestra. He currently performs throughout the region as a member of the North Carolina Guitar Quartet. In 2013, Dr. Hoke joined the UNCW music faculty where he teaches classical guitar and music theory. He received his DMA in classical guitar performance from Florida State University where he studied with Bruce Holzman. Awards include first prize in the 2012 Florida State University Doctoral Concerto Competition, top prize in the 2010 Appalachian Guitarfest International Competition, and a top prize in the 2010 Music Academy of North Carolina Guitar Competition. Dr. Hoke has previously served as a guitar instructor at Florida State University, Tallahassee Community College, Appalachian State University, and Emory and Henry College.
