The duo shows a particular talent for giving a solid delivery of what makes the flute and guitar so suited to each other: the wind’s long vocal line and the wood’s rich harmonic lines and percussive sound. It is evident these two have played together for a long time, but that they also strive to keep it fresh.

Several significant works for flute and guitar were written in the late 20th century by American composers. Cypress Duo will present a program featuring several of these works, including the entire collection of Robert Beaser’s Mountain Songs, based on Appalachian folk song, and Lowell Liebermann’s Sonata for flute and guitar. Other highlights include a newly transcribed work by Justin Hoke, 3 Preludes by George Gershwin, and a lesser known composition by Peter Schickele (also known as PDQ Bach). The performers will guide the listener through the program with short, intermittent discussions that introduce the context of each work.
